Collegiata di Sant'Anna, Cagliari
Facts and practical information
The collegiate church of St. Anne, in Cagliari, is the main parish church of the Stampace district along with the earlier Jesuit church dedicated to St. Michael. The monumental temple, dedicated to St. Anne, stands in the lower part of the historic district, on Azuni Street.
Its construction began in the late 18th century in the Baroque style to replace an earlier, modestly sized church dating from the 13th century. Severely damaged in 1943 during World War II due to bombing, it was rebuilt after the war.
The church is linked to a well-known Cagliari saying, Sa fabbrica de Sant'Anna, used sarcastically to label something interminable, comparing it to the very long and troubled construction story of the Stampace parish church.
