Valle dei Templi, Agrigento
Facts and practical information
The Valle dei Templi, a majestic collection of Greek ruins, stands as a testament to the ancient city of Akragas, today's Agrigento, on the southern coast of Sicily, Italy. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, this archaeological park is one of the most significant and well-preserved examples of Greater Greece art and architecture.
The site is characterized by the remains of seven temples, all in Doric style, constructed between about 510 BC and 430 BC. The most famous temple, and also the best-preserved, is the Temple of Concordia, which rivals the Parthenon in Athens in its size and preservation. It was converted into a Christian basilica in the 6th century, which likely contributed to its excellent state of preservation.
Another notable structure is the Temple of Hera Lacinia (or Juno), offering a picturesque view of the area, especially at sunset. The Temple of Heracles, although less intact, still conveys the grandeur of what was once a colossal structure through its remaining columns. The Temple of Olympian Zeus once stood as one of the largest temples of antiquity, though it now lies mostly in ruins, with only fragments of its giant atlas figures visible.
Visitors to the Valle dei Templi can explore the ancient ruins along a ridge lined with almond trees, which bloom spectacularly in early spring. The site also includes a sanctuary of chthonic deities, a series of burial practices, and the remains of the ancient city's walls, necropolis, and network of streets.
The archaeological park covers a vast area, and walking through the entire site can take several hours, so comfortable footwear is recommended. The Valle dei Templi is open year-round, with extended hours during the summer months. Nighttime visits are particularly enchanting as some of the temples are illuminated, providing a unique and atmospheric experience of these ancient wonders.
