St. Lawrence Church
Facts and practical information
The church of San Lorenzo a Fossato is a Catholic place of worship built in the village of Fossato, in the municipality of Cantagallo, in the province of Prato.
Built in the 11th century by the monastery of Fontana Taona, the church was enlarged around 1580, making the side aisles.
Next to the modest 19th-century facade rises the sturdy bell tower, possibly 15th-century. The rustic but pleasant interior has a nave and two aisles supported by stark Tuscan columns from the late 16th century; an 18th-century transformation gave the chancel its present appearance, which preserves a venerated 18th-century wooden crucifix on the high altar.
Along the walls is a majolica Stations of the Cross, probably made after the preaching of St. Leonard of Port Maurice in 1746, who spread this religious practice in the Prato area.
