Assisi's Museo Civico e Foro Romano allows visitors to visit the remains of the town's ancient Roman forum and also contains a collection of relevant archaeological objects.
In fact, Assisi, after having originated as an Umbrian settlement, strongly influenced by Etruscan civilization, around the 3rd century B.C. entered the Roman sphere of influence and in the 1st century B.C. became a Roman municipium.
The museum is partly housed in the crypt of the sanctuary of St. Nicholas of Piazza and partly extends under the square, where remains attributed to the ancient forum are visible.
