Chiesa di Nostra Signora del Rosario, Luras
Facts and practical information
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is a religious building located in Luras, a town in northeastern Sardinia. Consecrated to Catholic worship, it is the seat of the parish of the same name and is part of the diocese of Tempio-Ampurias.
The church dates from the end of the 16th century and was built at the behest of priest Giorgio Scano; it replaced the old, now dilapidated parish church, San Giacomo, later demolished in 1765 by order of the then bishop Pietro Paolo Carta. The building, made of exposed granite ashlars, has a niche in the façade containing the marble simulacrum of the Madonna perhaps from another church if not from the old parish church itself.
The interior contains three paintings of some artistic merit: the first depicting the Virgin of the Rosary, a Mannerist painting from the 17th century; Antonio Caboni's Pentecost; and Giovanni Patrone's Purgatory Souls from 1927. Also inside are two valuable marble lions, probably remnants of the ancient facade.
