The cathedral basilica of San Giuliano is the main place of Catholic worship in Caltagirone and mother church of the diocese of the same name. In 1948 Pope Pius XII elevated it to the rank of minor basilica. The high recognition was celebrated on January 27, 1949, the liturgical feast of St. Julian with a solemn pontifical service by Bishop Pietro Capizzi.
