Chiesa sussidiaria di S. Giovanni Battista, Esino Lario
Facts and practical information
The church of San Giovanni Battista is a subsidiary church of Esino Lario, part of the parish of San Vittore Martire. It was consecrated in 1565 and restored in 1635 for the first time.
Inside there is a rectangular hall, onto which opens a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows with an altar from 1850, on which stood the canvas depicting Our Lady of Sorrows now placed on the counterfaçade. The high altar dates from 1671 and is made of polychrome marble and features two stucco angels. What was once the altarpiece, dating from 1566 and depicting the Baptism of Christ, is now on the chancel wall, opposite the coeval canvas depicting the Preaching to the Crowds.
A number of canvases were made in the 17th century including a Nativity, a Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist, and a Madonna with Saints.
