Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, Gallarate
Facts and practical information
The church of St. Anthony Abbot is a church located in the historic center of Gallarate.
It is of tiny proportions and today appears almost 'submerged' by the adjacent buildings. Little is known about the origins of this church, which was probably built on the remains of an earlier one. However, it is known with certainty that already in the 15th century there was an oratory on this site known as the Oratory of St. Anthony. In the second half of the 18th century the church was totally rebuilt until it assumed its present architectural lines, inspired by a measured and harmonious Baroque style. In 1962 beautification and restoration work was carried out, aimed mainly at preventing the church from deteriorating excessively; the bell tower was also torn down and another facade was opened on the side opposite the original one.
