Oratorio di Santa Croce, Borutta
Facts and practical information
The Oratory of Santa Croce is a religious building located in Borutta, a town in northwestern Sardinia. Consecrated to Catholic worship, it is part of the parish of Santa Maria Maddalena, archdiocese of Sassari.
Built in the 12th century and heavily remodeled until the mid-20th century, it was the town's original rectory dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, the title of the present parish church. The building, once the seat of the confraternity of the same name, occasionally served as the cathedral seat for the last bishops of Sorres, particularly with Bishop Stefano Ardizzone, who owned a house in the villa of Borutta from 1432. Of some interest is the Romanesque apse and an arch supported by half-columns with twisted beams in the Catalan-Gothic style.
