Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena
Facts and practical information
The collegiate church of Santa Maria Maddalena is today the most important church in the municipality of Gradoli.
It was first mentioned in a document from 1296 as a chapel of the old medieval castle while the parish church was then the church of St. Michael the Archangel.
In 1440 it was enlarged and consecrated on September 10, 1447.
Severely damaged by fire in the late 17th century it was rebuilt in Baroque forms and consecrated on April 28, 1705 by Cardinal Marco Antonio Barbarigo, bishop of Montefiascone.
It preserves inside prestigious frescoes, a wooden pulpit by German artist Matthew Siler, and a marble baptismal font. The six side altars were formerly entrusted to the six confraternities of the village of which only one, the Confraternity of Purgatory, has survived today.
