The Reggio Calabria facility is recognized among Italy's leading centers for science and astronomy education and outreach, in particular.
Since 2013, the Planetarium has become one of ten national hubs for the organization of the Italian Astronomy Olympiad.
In 2014, by virtue of a special resolution of the Provincial Council, No. 45 of Nov. 26, 2014, the Provincial Administration declared the Planetarium: "Center of High Culture: an excellence of science and education" with the following motivation: "For its more than decennial commitment to the dissemination, knowledge and appreciation of Science and Astronomy, as an indispensable element of cultural enrichment and affirmation of the Human Sciences."
The Planetarium is an optical-mechanical instrument for reproducing the vault of heaven by projecting the image of stars and celestial bodies onto a hemispherical screen above the spectators.
The Planetarium has the ability to extremely realistically depict the appearance of the starry vault, creating in the viewer the perfect illusion of being outdoors under the celestial vault looking at the constellations during a cloudless night.
The instrument faithfully reproduces the movements of the celestial vault as they would appear to an observer at an assigned time and place.
