Chiesa di Santa Maria di Coros
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa Maria di Coros is a country church located in the territory of Ittiri, a town in northwestern Sardinia. Consecrated to Catholic worship, it is part of the parish of San Pietro in Vincoli, archdiocese of Sassari. The building, located about two kilometers from the town, was erected in the mid-13th century as a dependency of the abbey of Santa Maria di Paulis in Romanesque forms of French influence and can be considered the last church of the Cistercians in Sardinia. During the seventeenth century due to major rebuilding the facade lost its original appearance; subsequently the apse and part of the vault collapsed. Restorations carried out at the end of the last century returned it to the worship of the faithful, who renew their devotion to the Virgin Mary on September 8 each year. The archbishop of Sassari bears the honorary title of prior of Santa Maria di Coros.
