Porto Grande, Syracuse
Facts and practical information
The Port of Syracuse is a commercial and industrial, passenger, fishing, and tourist port of call on the southern Ionian coast of Sicily serving the city and area of Syracuse.
Although it is correct to refer to the port structure of Syracuse as a single port, it should be specified that it is actually composed of three distinct port areas under the jurisdiction of the maritime authority of the municipality of Syracuse: two of these are the Grand Port and the Marmorean Port; they are located on opposite sides of the island of Ortigia, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but they communicate with each other thanks to a canal surmounted by several bridges. The third area, on the other hand, lies to the north of the city, beyond Cape Santa Panagia, in the bay of the same name, and consists of the Refugio harbor and the docking wharf for petrochemical activities; this is where the Santa Panagia Detached Section of the Syracuse Harbour Master's Office is based, its headquarters being at Piazzale IV Novembre, at the mouth of the Grand Harbor.
The port complex of the city of Syracuse, in addition to having one of the most important industrial docks in Europe, can accommodate in its two and communicating port areas about 1,000 boats of different sizes, which makes Syracuse one of the largest recreational boating ports.
Since the entire municipal area faces the sea, beyond the three major landings there are other smaller ones located on the periphery that are part of the municipality's port system and are managed by the maritime district of Syracuse: these are the small port of Ognina, located in the bay of the same name, and the small port of Fontane Bianche; both located south of the city, near Cassibile.
