Chiesa di San Leopoldo Re
Facts and practical information
The Church of St. Leopold the King is a sacred building located in Vada, in the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo.
It was built to a design by Felice Francolini at the behest of Grand Duke Leopold II. Work began in 1844 and was completed in 1850; the church was elevated to parish status in 1851.
Set in the center of a large tree-lined square, it is preceded by a portico consisting of three round arches and closed in the apse area by a soaring bell tower.
In the lunette of the entrance door is a terracotta bas-relief by Franca Frittelli. The interior consists of a single nave and has a Latin cross plan, with an octagonal dome at the transept; above the entrance opens a chancel where the organ is located.
The church houses a remarkable canvas by Empolese painter Vincenzio Lami depicting the Madonna in Glory with Saints Hilary, Felix and Catherine of Siena. The canvas, built on a 16th-century scheme, is marked by an observant purism in the recovery of stylistic and chromatic simplicity. The polychrome stained glass windows, placed along the semicircular apse, on the other hand, date from the 1940s.
Nearby, at the back of the church, stands the medieval Vada Tower.
