Santa Maria del Tempio, Sutri
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa Maria del Tempio is a deconsecrated church in Sutri, along the Via Cassia.
It dates back to the 13th century and belonged to the Order of the Knights of the Temple, better known as the Templars. When these were suppressed in the 14th century the church passed to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, so it is also known by the name of St. John's Church. Above the entrance portal is a marble plaque recalling that the church, in the 15th century, was given in commenda to the church of Santa Maria in Carbonara in Viterbo.
Inside the church, now deconsecrated, remains of frescoes from different periods are visible. On the right side of the facade is a small bell gable.
The church is part of the Urban Park of the ancient City of Sutri, established in 1988: it is used as the park's service center.
