Santa Fortunata
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa Fortunata is an ancient rock church in Sutri, now abandoned.
It is one of the oldest sutrine churches. Around the year 1000 the rupestrian complex of Santa Fortunata arose as a religious settlement on a pre-existing ancient site. Some frescoes from the church and the outer complex were saved from neglect and are now kept at the Patrimonium Museum in Sutri.
Until the 1960s there was a spring near the church that was believed to be miraculous for breastfeeding; it was a tradition for expectant mothers to go on pilgrimage to drink the water that bubbled up there so that they could benefit from its thaumaturgical properties that would make the breasts grow for a breastfeeding of the newborn without problems of lack of milk.
The church is part of the Urban Park of the ancient City of Sutri, established in 1988.
