Church of Santa Maria Assunta, Capraia
Facts and practical information
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta is a sacred building located in Capraia Isola.
Built by the Pisans in the 11th century, it remains as evidence of the old port settlement, presumably abandoned because it was made unsafe by Saracen raids. Beneath the church are the foundations of the ancient Roman villa, the first human settlement on the island. In it is kept the wooden statue of the Virgin, which every year, on August 15, is carried in a solemn procession to the church of St. Nicholas. The interior is decorated with several votive offerings left by the people of Capri especially in the first half of the 20th century.
