Forte San Giorgio, Capraia
Facts and practical information
The Fort of San Giorgio is located on the island of Capraia in the Tuscan archipelago. The castle is located on high ground near the harbor on the northeastern side.
The castle was built from 1540 by the Genoese following the destruction by the corsair Dragut of the pre-existing settlement, based on a 12th-century Pisan fort.
With the construction of the fort, which could, if necessary, accommodate the entire population, the settlement in the center of the island was abandoned and the harbor developed more.
In the 19th century a large landslide, still clearly visible from the sea, involved the east side of the fort, causing numerous casualties among its inhabitants and destroying the "Women's Quarter," which included a nunnery. Today the castle has been renovated into private apartments.
