Church of St. Nicholas, Capraia
Facts and practical information
St. Nicholas Church is a Catholic place of worship located in Piazza Milano in Capraia Isola.
It is the parish church of the present town, which arose in the 11th century around the Fort of St. George. The church, which, according to tradition, owes its name to the wooden statue of St. Nicholas fished out of the sea and still visible inside, is set on three naves separated by pillars and characterized by stucco decorations executed in the 18th century by local craftsmen.
Several chapels open along the aisles, including that of St. Erasmus, traditionally belonging to fishermen, and that of St. Augustine. Also of interest are the canvas of the Annunciation, and that depicting the Virgin with St. Catherine and St. Dominic. In the apse is the 18th-century wooden choir, topped by the choir loft and pipe organ, built in the 17th century for the convent of St. Francis in Bastia and moved there in 1793.
