Santuario di Nostra Signora di Bonuighinu
Facts and practical information
The shrine of Our Lady of Bonu Ighinu is a country church, located in the territory of the municipality of Mara, a short distance from the ruins of the castle of Bonvehì. The shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, in whose honor the annual feast is held on the third Sunday in September, preceded by a novena.
According to one legend, the church was erected on the site where Our Lady is said to have appeared, to ask the inhabitants of Mara and neighboring villages, in perpetual conflict with each other, to re-establish the rules of bonu ighinau, of good neighborliness. Hence the title, in the Sardinian language, of Bonu Ighinu, or "good neighbor."
