Chiesa di Santa Maria Iscalas
Facts and practical information
The church of Santa Maria Iscalas is a country church located in the territory of Cossoine, a town in northwestern Sardinia. Consecrated to Catholic worship, it is part of the parish of Santa Chiara, archdiocese of Sassari.
The church stands on a plateau at the foot of Mount Traessu, about ten kilometers from the town. Built in the Byzantine style, scholars ascribe it to rather different periods ranging from the 6th-7th centuries to the 10th-11th centuries.
The building has a free cross plan and is made of white limestone, with large-sized ashlars placed interlocking in the corners and others, freshly hewn, used in the infill wall mirrors. Parts of wall paintings executed in medieval times are preserved inside.
