Church of San Giorgio Martire
Facts and practical information
The church of San Giorgio is a place of worship located in Semestene, a town in the Meilogu region of Sardinia. Consecrated to Catholic worship, it is the seat of the parish of the same name and is part of the diocese of Alghero-Bosa. The building, adjacent to the town hall, faces Piazza Dante Alighieri and is accessed by a wide flight of steps.
The church, dating as its earliest structure to the 12th century, underwent major renovations between the 17th and early 18th centuries. The facade is divided into two orders by a projecting cornice below which opens an architraved and tympanumed portal, embellished on either side by two pilasters and jambs adorned with a bundle of three small columns. Prominent on the left is the tall bell tower, gugliata, square-barrelled and divided into six orders by five sets of cornices. The interior has a single-nave hall, divided into four vaulted bays, three of which are barrel-vaulted and the last one - the one attributable to the first layout - cross-vaulted, over which several side chapels open.
