Monte Gennaio
Facts and practical information
Mt. January, also called Mt. dell'Uccelliera, is a mountain in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, reaching 1810.1 meters above sea level; other sources give the figure as 1814 m above sea level.
It is situated on the border between the provinces of Pistoia and Bologna; part of its complex is the poggio delle Ignude, a rise located a little further south. Together with the nearby Corno alle Scale and the ridge that, continuing northwest, reaches Mount Cimone, it serves as a watershed between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic basins.
The summit of Mt. January is easily reached either from the valley of the Orsigna creek, passing through the Porta Franca Shelter, or from the villages of Pratorsi, located in the valley of the Verdiana creek, and Casetta Pulledrari.
More challenging, on the other hand, are the trails that reach the summit starting from the Bologna side. The obligatory departure, in this case, is the Segavecchia Refuge.
Above the boundary elevation of the forest is an extensive area of cow pasture that also characterizes other mountains in the area, such as Mount La Nuda and Mount Cornaccio. Of the rest, the vegetation and fauna are those characteristic of the Teso Forest and the Corno alle Scale Regional Park.
