Church of San Giorgio Martire
Facts and practical information
The church of San Giorgio is a religious building located in Pozzomaggiore, a town in northwestern Sardinia. Consecrated to Catholic worship, it is the seat of the parish of the same name and is part of the diocese of Alghero-Bosa.
The church, dedicated to St. George, was built in the 16th century in late Gothic form, on the Catalan Gothic model with a single nave divided into five bays - the first of which is surmounted by the chancel - with pointed arches on polygonal pillars. The vaults are ribbed and twinned, with chapels between buttresses vaulted with barrel vaults.
The facade, made of gilded sandstone ashlars, has diagonal buttresses that form with the plane of the elevation to which they are connected by two volutes, a kind of backdrop, scenographically emphasized by the later staircase, which highlights the original height difference. Beneath the horizontal cornice, adorned with a vine shoot, is an interweaving of inflected arches. At the apex stands the statue of the saint with unsheathed sword, in white stone contrasting with the dark trachyte dragon at his feet.
The portal, with slender half-columns between pinnacles has no lintel while this one, deteriorated, is carved with inflected arches, reminiscent of the Gothic one in the church of San Pietro di Bosa.
