Serraventosa, Elba
Facts and practical information
Serraventosa is a relief on the island of Elba, the site of a small rock necropolis from the Bronze Age until the Iron Age.
At the site, characterized by the presence of some goatsheds used by the Marcian shepherd Oreste Anselmi, called The King of the Mountain, an important rock burial was found in a shelter known at least since 1820 as Giuliano's Cave. The tomb yielded a truncated clay bowl, an impasto jar, a milk kettle, a bronze fibula, and some shells probably used as food offerings for the deceased. It has been speculated that the burial was reused several times, spanning from the early 11th century BC to the 9th century BC. The materials found are preserved at the Archaeological Museum in Marciana. At a higher elevation is the Caprile dei Colli with the oldest stone hut on the island, built by Marciana shepherd Pietro Anselmi together with his son Oreste in the late 19th century.
