Torre della Regina, Capraia
Facts and practical information
Torre delle Barbici, or Torre della Regina or Torre di Punta Teja, is one of the four coastal towers on Capraia Island in the Tuscan archipelago. The place was also formerly called Barbisi or Barbici, from which other tower names are derived. The name Torre della Regina has no historical basis.
It is located on the western side of the island to guard the channel from the Corsica side. It was built by the Genoese in 1699 to control enemy raids by Corsairs. Through smoke signals it was in contact with all the other towers on the island. The tower is the only one with a square base on the island and its appearance today is dilapidated, partly because it has never been restored, and since 2009 it has been accessible by land with a new path from the Porto Vecchio area.
