La Nuda
Facts and practical information
Mount La Nuda is located in the Emilia-Romagna Region, in the metropolitan city of Bologna, opposite the Balzi dell'Ora, the overhanging and jagged northern ridge of the Corno alle Scale and is separated from the latter by the Passo del Vallone, a narrow saddle from which one can see the very steep eastern slope looming over the Silla River valley. Mount La Nuda is located within the Corno alle Scale Regional Park and is so called because its highest part is completely devoid of tree and shrub vegetation: on its slopes can be observed the vaccinieto and rocky prairies that are home to even rare flower species, typical of the stony environment. The existence of an ancient glacial cirque can be observed between Mount La Nuda and Corno alle Scale: a clear example of the conformation of the Regional Park. The Cavone cirque was shaped at the end of the Quaternary, during the Würm period from 10,000 to 70,000 years ago, by a glacier that slowly eroded the slopes of Corno alle Scale and La Nuda. In the lower part of the glacial cirque is the source of the Rio Piano and a small lake where the Rifugio del Cavone is located. This area due to its geomorphological setting is worthy of the highest protection. From the aforementioned refuge departs one of the paths leading to the Nuda. From the summit there are spectacular views of the Corno alle Scale Regional Park. The panorama sweeps 360 degrees and is beautiful: on clear days, the view reaches as far as the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
