Monte Piella
Facts and practical information
Mount Piella is a rise in the high Bolognese Apennines included in the municipal territory of Alto Reno Terme and on the left side of the Rio Maggiore, from which it is visibly separated by a cliff called Balzo del Romìto.
Mt. Piella remains rather isolated from the surrounding mountains and mountain complexes; it is not very far from Mt. Tresca, but it cannot be considered part of its complex, since it is separated from it by the valley of a small brook, which originates from Mt. Tresca and flows into the Rio Maggiore. It is also lower than Mount Tresca: it reaches a maximum elevation of 1198 meters, as opposed to the average 1400 meters of the aforementioned complex.
Important tributary streams of the Rio Maggiore originate from Mt. Piella.
It is also an important location for television repeaters of private TV and radio stations of public importance such as Mountain Rescue and Civil Defense, covering the upper and middle Rhine Valley.
To date, the TV muxes transmitted from the summit of Mt. Piella are: Mediaset DVB3 CH38 horizontal, Timb DVB1 CH47 horizontal, Timb DVB3 CH48 horizontal, Mediaset DVB4 CH49 horizontal, Timb DVB2 CH60 horizontal, On its summit on September 26, 1976 an iron cross with lattice structure was erected. This work was desired by the local alpine group of Porretta Terme. The structure was made by DEMM, an important mechanical industry based in Porretta Terme.
On September 8, 2013, a Vellardi-branded telescope was inaugurated on the belvedere of Mount Piella, allowing close-up views of the vast surrounding panorama. This device was desired by the pro-loco of Capugnano, a town in the municipality of Alto Reno Terme, located at the foot of the mountain.
Next to the binoculars during the year 2015, a plaque was placed depicting the view that can be observed from the lookout.
Also mounted was a wooden bulletin board bearing the history of the nearby villages of Castelluccio and Capugnano.
